Arab American University Announces Scientific Researches Award Winners

This year, University announced launching two annual awards to promote scientific research, which were approved by the University's Board of Directors. Best Published Research in Arab American University Research Journal Award 2016, Arab American University Excellence Award in Scientific Research for Palestinian Universities Academics and Engineer Zuhair Hijawi Scientific Research Award for Palestinian universities students’.

Best Published Research in Arab American University Research Journal Award

During the winners’ announcement, University President Prof. Dr. Ali Zeidan Abu Zuhri said 18 published researches in AAUJ researches journal competed after publishing in two issues of AAUJ journal in 2016. Pointing, the journal was first issued on June 2014 with Scientific Research Deanship launch at the Arab American University, concerned with natural, human, medical and engineering sciences

The researches have been evaluated by experienced researchers and scientific from abroad. This award aims to encourage researchers to publish their valuable researches in the university research journal to create scientific competition spirit among researchers to improve both the level of published research and the magazine.       

Best scientific research award winner research was published in the 2016 Arab American Researches Journal, the $10,000 prize split in half between Prof. Dr. Atef Qasrawi from Arab American University for his research “Negative Magnetoresistivity in T14Se3S Crystals” and researcher Dr. Siraj Jadeed University of Tishreen, Syria, for a published paper entitled “Examples of seismic log transactions using genetic algorithms”.

Arab American University Excellence Award in Scientific Research for Palestinian Universities Academics

The award in its 2017 version contained three categories, 4 thousand dollars for each.

First category in the field of natural, engineering and technological sciences, included 26 researchers from several Palestinian universities. The researches were conducted by internal committees then international committees form abroad. This category prize was awarded jointly to Dr. Essam Al-Khatib from Birzeit University and Dr. Hamza Al-Zubadi, Ghassan Safarini from An-Najah University for their research entitled “Radon in Harvested Rainwater at the Household Level, Palestine”. The other winner in this category is Prof. Dr. Atef Qasrawi from Arab American University and his team from Saudi Arabia Dr. Sabah Al-Qarni, King Abdullah Aziz University in Jeddah for their research titled, “Impedance Spectroscopic Analysis of the InSe / ZnSe / InSe” published in IEEE journal Transactions on Electron Devices.

The second category of the Arab American University Excellence Award in Scientific Research for Academics was medical and health sciences field. 15 researchers applied for the award. After internal screening process and international evaluation outside the country Dr. Suheir Erekat from Al-Quds University won and her team Dr. Abdel-Majid Nasser Eldeen, Dr. Ahmed Abdelqader, Dr. Taher Zeid, Dr. Kifaya Azmi, Dr. Ziad Abdin from Al-Quds University, Dr. Moriel Toussat of France and Dr. Amer Jawabra from Arab American University, for their research “Molecular Evidence of Bartonella Species in Ixodid Ticks and Domestic Animals in Palestine”, published in Frontiers in Microbiology journal.

Engineer Zuhair Hijawi Scientific Research Award 2017

This scholarship is specialized by the member of University Board of Directors Eng. Zuhair Hijawi for Palestinian universities graduates’ projects in IT, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Water and Renewable Energy, Medical and Biological Sciences fields.

1. Information Technology category winners: Hamza Ziyoud, Ali Bani Odeh and Mohammed Nadi from Faculty of Engineering and IT Computer Systems Engineering Department at the Arab American University, their research title “Smart Blind Glove (SBG)” supervised by Prof. Mohamed Awad. Also Ahmad Abu Khames, Saja Abu Farha and Ohud Bsharat from Communication Engineering Department at Arab American University Faculty of Engineering and IT, their research entitled “Lung Cancer Detection Using Image Processing Techniques” supervised by Dr. Hazem Khanfar.
2. Engineering category winners: May Anati, Nancy Arman, Ghaida Shakarneh and Duaa Natsheh from Environmental Technology Engineering Department of at Polytechnic University of Palestine Faculty of Engineering and Technology, their research title “Inventory and GIS Spatial Distribution of the Industrial Hazardous Waste in Hebron City” and supervised by Dr. Maher Jabari. Another winners are Manal Labada and Aya Shshtari from An-Najah University Department of Computer Engineering, their research title “SMART Deaf-Mute Glove” supervised by Dr. Mona Damidi
3. Environmental Sciences, Water and Renewable Energy category winners: Aseel Badir and Jenan Sarsour from Polytechnic University of Palestine Faculty of Environmental Technology Engineering, their research title “Preparation of Activated Carbon through Pyrolysis of Agricultural Waste for Wastewater Treatment Applications” supervised by Dr. Hasan Sawalha and Dr. Maher Jabari. Also Tasneem Al-Ashab and Areen Nasir Aldeen from Polytechnic University of Palestine Faculty of Environmental Technology Engineering, their research title “Enhancing the Characteristics of Artificial Stone Utilizing Local Industrial Waste” supervised by Dr. Maher Jabari.
4. Medical and Biological Sciences category winners: Hiba Al-Aloul, Razan Al-Qadi and Anwar Preget from the Polytechnic University of Palestine, their research title “An Alternative to Antibiotics: The Isolation of Salmonella Bacteriophage that Kills Poultry Pathogenic Salmonella” supervised by Dr. Fawzi Razim. Also Arjwan Gneidi, Hanaa Muhtasib and Haya Fakhouri from the Polytechnic University of Palestine, their research title “Isolation and Characterization of Avian-Pathogenic Escherichia Coli (APEC) Bacteriophages from Sewage” supervised by Dr. Murad Shnaiwer.
