Medical Imaging Department at the Arab American University of Jenin held a workshop entitled "Recent Technology in Early Detection of Breast Cancer”. The workshop aimed to acknowledge the latest technology in the field of medical imaging, for early detection of breast cancer. It also identified mechanisms of disease control and prevention methods. The workshop was held with the participation of a group of institutions and private hospitals, as well as the attendance of students of Medical Imaging Department.
The Participants :
Prof. Dr. Muhammad Asia; the Dean of the Allied Health Sciences Faculty, started the workshop, in which he welcomed the attendees, and stressed the importance of such workshops in exchanging experiences. Dr. Asia also pointed out that this workshop aimed to discuss the recent trends in the technical field of early detection of breast cancer, besides the prevention methods. Besides, he explained that the mission of Allied Health Sciences Faculty at the university is to build the partnerships with specialized institutions and hospitals, in order to improve the medical performance and services. In addition to promote the demanded skills, as well as educate students, and address the community awareness.
The Scientific lectures
The chairman of Dunia Foundation for Combating Breast Cancer, Dr. Nufouz Muslmani, presented a brief explanation of the self-test methods for detecting breast cancer, parallel with the prevention methods of the disease. She suggested the procedures that women must have taken when a mass found in the breast. Dr. Muslmani stressed the importance of conducting the preventive examinations to detect breast cancer by providing a radiological mammographic device, in hospitals and medical centers, side by side with performing a proper training and acknowledgment about it.
Dr. Issam Nazzal, the specialist in medical imaging at Al-Razi Hospital, talked about the diagnosis of breast cancer by using mammographic device, and the magnetic resonance technology. He displayed some of pathological cases to distinguish between benign and malignant tumor in the breast, by using mammographic device and the magnetic resonance technology. Parallel with showing the differences in the tumors shapes .
On the other hand, Ahlam Issa, a professor in the Medical Imaging Department, explained the procedure of conducting the mammography, and the cases of the mammographic radiological imaging. In addition to spotting the mistakes that could have be carried out by the medical imaging technician during the mammographic imaging for breast cancer, and how to avoid such mistakes to increase the accuracy in detecting the disease.
Mohammed Hamed, the director of Marriam Foundation for Cancer Control, presented a detailed explanation of the activities that are undertaken by the organization, to serve the community in combating the cancer. He also gave an overview about the courses that are organized by the foundation to raise the awareness, particularly in combating the breast cancer.
In turn, Moiz Shulbak, the Head of the Health and Environmental Sciences Department, talked about nutrition and its role in cancer. He discussed the impact of the quality of the daily diet over our safety from serious diseases, and he stressed the importance of the type of food in combating the cancers which include: olives oil, parsley, walnuts, broccoli, and other nutrients that have a key role in combating the cancer that they contain anti-oxidants.
The head of the Medical Imaging Department, Dr. Mohammed Jamal, spoke about "Breast Biopsy (X-ray guided - Stereotactic) and explained a new technology device that aimed to take a sample of the tumor, in an easy and accurate way. This device, moreover, depends on mammographic imaging, in addition to a computer system that has the ability to meticulously identify and take the sample. Moiz Shulbak pointed out that being provided with such a device will have a positive influence on diagnosing the disease without surgical intervention.
The technician at the Medical Imaging Laboratory, Avitan Haj Yousif, spoke about a study entitled "The Detection of Breast Cancer by Using the Ultrasound Waves Technique (ABUS)", Where she indicated that this technique is considered a very modern one, and it is available in Jordan. This technique would also enable detecting breast cancer in an easy and accurate way, without the need for being exposed to radiation, since it does not use pictorial rays. Instead, it depends on the ultrasound imaging waves. Moreover, Avitan stressed the need to have this technique in Palestine, due to its multiple benefits, and its high capacity in diagnosing the cancer.
