Researcher Jwana Ghaleb Hafi, a Conflict Resolution and Development Program student at the Arab American University Faculty of Graduate Studies, defended her thesis titled “The Higher Education Institutions Role in Promoting Palestinian Identity – Arab American University as Example”.
In her thesis, Hafi discussed the higher education role in promoting Palestinian identity: the Arab American University – Jenin – as case study. After the crises and transformations the Palestinian identity have been through, taking into account the identity historical context, and focusing on the Oslo era with its lack of administrative organizational structure, decline of political awareness, and adopting awareness linked to the peace and negotiations concept, where the consensus on the Palestinian national project and weakened the PLO political structure represented, and clear decline in political parties presence in social and cultural life. She pointed that this period, which has implications on a generation of students born after the 1993 Oslo agreement and lived a political emptiness represented in the political awareness decline and absence of a phased solution to the Palestinian issue.
At the end of the defense, the committee consisting of the thesis supervisor and chairman of the committee Dr. Mofeed Qasoum, the Arab American University internal examiner Prof. Ayman Yousef, and the external examiner from An-Najah University Dr. Abdul Sattar Qassem, decided to grant the student a master degree.
