A STATEMENT ISSUED BY THE ARAB AMERICAN UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATION

In reference to the clamour that has been deployed and traded through the means of social communications and some other news sites on the issue of ending the services of a newly appointed teacher at the university, the Arab-American University Administration clarifies the following:

  1. A video was posted on the social media for a student singing ‘Mawawil’ during the teacher’s lecture, while in turn the teacher was encouraging him and motivating the students to participate.
  2. This action is contrary to the University regulations and instructions, and to the sanctity of the teaching process, since this lecture is dedicated for teaching the International Accounting Course, not for a popular ‘Zajal’ or vocals.
  3. Just as the University is keen to the academic process, it is keen on a permanent basis to activate the extra-curricular, cultural and recreational activities for students of the university and assigns one hour of free time per day to such activities.
  4. The University is the most keen to safeguard the rights of its students, and the most important rights is to receive advanced and sophisticated education through lectures, laboratories and modern teaching methods, and they have their specified time and attendance is mandatory.While the other extracurricular activities have their specified time and attendance is selective.Thus, the rights of students to education must be maintained in the specified times for education
  5. Inasmuch of the great abuse that has affected the academic reputation of the University after the publication of this video, a legal investigation committee was formed to consider this case.The teacher was summoned to the university administration, and because he is newly appointed and still is under the legal probation, the University is entitled of involuntary termination during which, and he has admitted in a written confession signed by him to what he has done.
  6. Based on the above, the investigation committee submitted to Professor Dr. Rector its recommendation for terminating the service of the teacher.
  7. The University Administration is flabbergasted and deplores the discreditable campaign that is waged against it and its decision that was carried out in accordance to its laws and regulations, and in accordance to the law in order to preserve the academic process and the rights of students, rather than being blessed for its position and its reaction to conserve the University.
  8. The University Administration confirms that it continuously keeps track on all its academic and administrative processes, and hold accountable whoever violates the regulations and instructions and decisions that regulates the University.
  9. The regulations and instructions of the university allows, to whoever issued against them punishments, to submit an appeal to the verdict.
