The Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology at the Arab American University hosted the 12th National Educational Robotics Competition in Palestine “First Lego League”, entitle “The Water Journey” organized by Thought Foundation in cooperation with the Ministry of Higher Education and with the participation of the public and private schools teams from Tulkarem, Qalqiliya, Nablus, Southern-Nablus, Qabatiya, Jenin and Tubas.
The First Lego Robotics Competition is one of the most exciting and fast-paced competitions. It’s a combination of education and creativity on one hand and fun and entertainment on the other. It is for the age group of 9-16 years of school students, each team consists of 2-10 students in addition to their coach and supervisor.
It aims to encourage students to become interested in science and technology, build knowledge and innovate by involving them early in the search for creative solutions to the global problems and providing them with the right environment to enhance 21st century skills.
The robot competitions jury conducted by specialized committees formed of Palestinian universities and experts from public and private sectors, a number of university students’ volunteers in organizing it. Each year it addresses a new cosmopolitan theme, this season’s is “Water Journey” seeking to find innovative solutions to water problems.
At the end of the competition, the jury announced the four winning teams; Ahli Qalqilya Club took the first place, Tala’3 Al-Amal School in the second place, Askar Basic Girls School comes third, and Kufur Zebad secondary mixed fourth. This level’s winning teams will compete next week at Birzeit University to select only four teams to represent Palestine at the Arab Open Robot Championship which will be held in Sharm El-Shaikh, Egypt on 23-26/3/2018, with the participation of a large number of teams from different Arab countries.
The competition is based on four things: the project, where each participating team has to identify a water problem and find a creative solution for it as well as a robot design and programming to use in solving water problems. Each team strives to make the best possible design using high-precision technological and mechanical tools including motors, gears, sensors of all types, and programming it to perform a set of tasks within two and a half minutes. The core values are exploration, teamwork, decision-making and professionalism through training and practice. The final challenge is a robot racing field where each team will demonstrate the best in their robots design and programming.
