Abstract:
New design of Simple Bubbling Fluidized Bed Combustor (BFBC) was constructed and been used to study the chemical reactions in the gas phase. Kinetic and thermodynamic discussion will be presented here to explain the combustion processes so as to assist in finetoning the combustor and, hence, minimize the production of NOx and CO. The discussion takes into account the effect of gas flow, fuel combustion, heat released, and variation of temperature between first ignition and subsequent cooling cycle before the next re-ignition. By understanding the effects of these conditions on chemical reactions one can demonstrate and explain some apparently buzzling information especially about the observed increase of NOx at a lower reignition temperature. The mixing of fuel and air is the key factor with respect to the quality of combustion, i.e., less of NOx and CO released. Inhomogeneities during mixing and vaporization (in case of liquid fuels) lead to an increment release of NOx and CO. Chemically activated adducts formed through radical recombination, or insertion reactions are temperature dependent. Reactions at hightemperature exhibit multiple- pathway reactions. In 2009, Americans produced about 243 million tons of MSW, or about 4.3 pounds of waste per person per day (according to report by US-EPA). Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) consists of everyday items we use and then throw away, such as product packaging, grass clippings, furniture, clothing, bottles, food scraps, newspapers, appliances, paint, and batteries. This comes from our homes, schools, hospitals, and businesses. By spreading the use of BFBC worldwide, then it will be the most effective way to rid of home wastes besides its capability of supplying us with cheap source of energy.
